What does your business do?

We sell the only all ska subscription box! We pack and ship mystery boxes full of indie ska merch on a monthly basis! We buy merch directly from the bands in our scene and rebrand it under SKA BOX monthly themes!

When and why did you start your business?

SKA BOX was established in 2020, right before the pandemic hit. I used to have a partner, but we split ways in May of 2020 and I have been running SKA BOX solo since. My old partner and I were going to shows on a weekly basis and her car was always packed with old subscription boxes. One day I was teasing her and we joked, "Why isn't there something like this for ska?" And I just jumped in with both feet.

I designed the box and set up social media. And then we just went from there!

We started SKA BOX to support the ska scene! I have always been involved in my diy punk scene, and fell in love with ska at a young age. I wanted to do something to support local bands that also allowed me to have a creative outlet.

With SKA BOX, we get to use the funds from subscribers to purchase merch from bands in the ska scene. We focus on independent and diy bands, and use the box to promote whatever cool project they have going on.

Is it your full time job?

No, I work full time too. SKA BOX is more of a side gig right now. Hopefully it will become a full time job in the future!

Do you have any business partners? If so, how did you come together and how do you make decisions?

I had a partner when I started SKA BOX, but she wound up leaving in May of 2020. It was a bummer, but I just kept moving forward.

Are there other people that work for your business or that support your business and if so, how many and what do they do?

I don't have any employees at this time, but I have a lot of support from my family and the ska scene. My mom helps me pack boxes and ship packages. And podcasts and bands have been awesome about spreading the word.

How do you market your business?

We post a lot on social media. Sometimes we advertise on Facebook and Instagram. We have an email list. We had plans for in person events, but that will have to wait.

What has been most rewarding about your business?

The most rewarding part of SKA BOX has been the joy it brings customers. We get so many happy, lovely comments. It really makes my day, every day.

Bands have been really kind too.

What has been the biggest challenge involving your business?

Our biggest challenge has been shipping delays due to pandemic life. We ship with the USPS and they have been struggling a bit, like the rest of us.

What future plans do you have for your business?

We have lots of plans in the works! We are working with some awesome bands this year! 🤫🤫 We have plans to launch a smaller box option, as well as a vinyl only box option soon. I also have a punk box in the works this year!

What advice would you have for someone else wanting to do something similar to what you have done?

Just do it. I hesitated for years and missed out on so many opportunities. Research it. Start working at it. And make it happen.
